New Chair Orientation
The Office of the Deputy Provost and the Provost’s Office of Faculty Development and Diversity hold an annual orientation geared to newly appointed chairs, and open to all heads of academic units.
Offered over two days, the New Chair Orientation exposes chairs to insights and perspectives from university leaders, seasoned chairs, and campus experts and partners about effective approaches to managing departments.
Orientation sessions include:
- What I Wish I Knew Before I Became Chair (chairs’ panel)
- Understanding the Legal Landscape (with university counsel)
- Managing staff, Working with Department Managers, and Other Human Resource Issues (with HR partners and faculty and department managers)
- Tenure and Reappointment Considerations (with the deputy provost)
- Understanding Conflict in an Academic Setting (with the Scheinman Institute for Conflict Resolution staff)
Department and unit heads receive invitations to the annual orientation.
