3/20 Talking with Policy Makers About Your Research

Cornell faculty with experience discussing their research findings with policy makers will join Joel Malina, Vice President for University Relations, in sharing their insights on the keys to a successful meeting with Congressional staff and federal agency officials.
The panelists are:
  • Joel Malina, Vice President for University Relations;
  • Kathleen Rasmussen, professor of nutritional sciences. She has chaired and served on expert committees at the Institute of Medicine; and,
  • Art DeGaetano, professor in earth and atmospheric sciences. He has participated in a number of Capitol Hill meetings related to climate change and other topics, and is director of the Northeast Regional Climate Center.

Topics to be discussed include reasons to meet with policy makers; picking the optimal time and audience; preparing the message and handouts; academic background, experience and role of Congressional and agency staff; and how research findings are used in policy debates.
